Essay No. 191:
It’s More Painful To Do Nothing Than To Do Something: The statement means that idleness causes pain and sourness in life. It is a source of irritation to those who are all the time engaged in some activity or the other. If they are overpowered by idleness owing to lack of any preoccupation, they are upset.
They feel themselves like a fish out of water. If they are out of activity, they are out of tune with themselves. Activity provides them the stimulus and freshness. Late Justice M.R. Kayani in one of his speeches pointed out that he could not afford to remain idle even for a moment.
On Sundays, to keep himself engaged, he went to his garden along with a scythe in his hand to do the gardening. He removed parasites around plants. He perspired profusely in doing the hard job of gardening. Justice Kayani felt a typical pleasure in doing the strenuous job. He did it of his own accord.
There was no compulsion for him to do it. Justice Kayani preferred doing gardening to taking rest or doing nothing. Hence those who are used to do some kind of activity, would find them not handing on them. If they were to remain idle even for a minute their life would become miserable, idleness promotes more inertia, which is death-knell to life.

Doing something is far happy a choice than doing nothing at all. All the big personalities including the leaders, the scientists, the dramatists, the novelists, were all the time engaged in their pursuits. They did not steal time to waste it in idleness.
They were all the time up and doing. Idleness does not suit dynamites. Idleness and activity are poles apart. This demands action to resolve myriad of complex problems. It does not tolerate sluggishness or laziness. Persons suffering from sloth are failure in life. One should avoid sluggishness under all conditions.
Life lies in movement. Lack of movement—mental or physical, indicates death. Living nations like to court difficult situations rather than adopting escapism, because they believe that ‘it is more painful to do nothing than to do something’.
