Modern Times Are Not For Poetry: Modern times are the times of rising materialism. People belonging to different classes, are seen after materialism like a hound to satisfy their material desires. They wish to acquire material means to gratify their worldly desires. The rich wish to enhance their already sprawled wealth. They aim at adding something new to their assets.

An industrialist wishes to establish new industrial units to expand his industrial empire. His craze for wealth remains insatiable. The poor in the Third World countries wish to get out of the poverty trap. They can break the shackles of poverty by raising their income level.

The poor section of the society is ruthlessly engaged in supplementing its meager resources with new opportunities of employment to better its economic lot. It is nothing except to chase material pursuits of life most vigorously. The poor, who get out of the poverty trap, wish to remain out of it permanently. The strategy to achieve the objective lies in intensifying the hot pursuit of materialism.

Another fact worth mentioning is that the people’s material aspirations have gone up, for the satisfaction of which increasing economic resources are required. Aspirations are far higher than the availability of economic resources. This phenomenon holds good in Pakistan society. In short, the West and the East, both in varying degrees, chase materialism to meet out the material desires. The West stands for increasing the degree of economic affluence already attained, while the East aims at reducing the economic poverty through the pursuit of economic development.

It is a struggle to acquire economic resources to raise the level of development to fight against poverty. This shows the modern times are the times of materialism. The calls of materialism are to be met in every walk of life.

Materialism has made man a sort of robot. The higher longings of life stand stifled at the hands of materialism. There is a saying that man does not live by bread alone. In the past, moshairas were hold at the college, university and individual levels. People had the outlet to release their mental steam by listening to poetry. Eminent poets were invited in mosharias to recite their ‘Kalam’ (verses) and they evoked spontaneous appreciation form the people.

The audience felt joy and momentarily forgot about their turmoil’s of life. It was a good way of neutralizing the frustration and tension of the people. Hence there is an impelling need to revive the institution of moshaira in the modern times which feel thirsty of aestheticism.
